Developed in collaboration with renowned consultancy firm KPMG, the strategy places a strong emphasis on the economic sustainability of the publishing sector, moving beyond mere survival to enable long-term growth and innovation.

The strategy is built on five key pillars: strengthening Malta’s literary ecosystem; promoting the Maltese language and culture locally and abroad; improving access to books; enhancing governance and transparency; and fostering strategic collaborations.

During the launch, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, reiterated the Government’s commitment to placing books at the heart of Maltese life, saying, “A thriving industry needs long-term planning. This strategy ensures that what we do today will remain relevant and sustainable for future generations.”

CEO of the National Book Council, Mark Camilleri, welcomed the launch of what he described as the Council’s first-ever long-term strategic plan. Camilleri added, “Our vision is ambitious, but it’s grounded in a strong desire to bring about the necessary change within the publishing industry. This will be achieved through progressive goals.

With this strategy, we want to ensure the industry is sustainable, promote professionalisation, expand opportunities for stakeholders, and drive innovation in line with 21st-century skills and demands.”

The Strategic Vision underlines the Council’s ambitions not just for the next five years but well beyond, with the ultimate aim of ensuring that Maltese literature is read and appreciated locally, and celebrated internationally.
