Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed various issues in a recent Times of Malta interview, starting with the budget and economic developments.

He praised the ongoing improvements in people’s lives, highlighting the €70 weekly increase for pensioners over the past decade. He also pointed out that families with average incomes and two children will see an additional €1,800 annually.

Abela noted that the Maltese economy has doubled since 2013, showcasing the government’s focus on economic growth and its Vision 2050 plan, which sets clear, dynamic goals for the next 25 years. He explained that foreign experts were recruited to draft the plan alongside the Ministry for the Economy, ensuring a forward-thinking approach.

Turning to the Villa Rosa site, Abela discussed the public consultation underway, as well as the existing permits for the site. He reassured the public that, while the site will undergo improvements with the new local plans, no virgin land will be disturbed.

The area, he noted, is already a tourist destination, and the changes will enhance its quality. He also mentioned the Nationalist Party leader’s support for the project, having met with the developer and expressed a desire to inaugurate it if he becomes Prime Minister.

In response to opposition criticisms, Abela addressed the issue of Nationalist Party Deputy Toni Bezzina, who holds a €50,000 government job but reportedly attends work only to collect his fuel voucher. Abela confirmed that an investigation has been requested by the Standards Commissioner.

The Prime Minister also spoke about Amanda Muscat’s termination, clarifying that he had ended her contract three years ago, before the Public Life Standards Commissioner issued their report.

He explained that although Muscat had worked the required hours, the report raised concerns about her salary, which led him to suggest that the government’s recruitment manual might need updating.

However, Abela emphasised that no rules had been breached, and that further decisions regarding the matter will be made by the parliamentary committee on standards in public life.
