Murderous Driving Should Equal Lifetime Driving Ban, Says PN MP

Taking to social media, Nationalist MP Mark Anthony Sammut has called for murderous driving to result in a ‘lifetime ban from touching a vehicle and an effective jail-term. Period.’

‘About time we fix our lenient laws and clean up the roads’, he concluded.

Since January, Malta’s Opposition Nationalist Party has urged the creation of a national action plan to tackle the growing road safety crisis, he said on behalf of the Opposition.

The party’s proposals include strict and continuous enforcement of traffic laws, particularly targeting driving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine.

They also call for tougher penalties and licence suspensions for those who cause accidents through reckless or negligent behaviour, especially when these result in injury or loss of life.

Sammut stressed the importance of educational campaigns to promote respect among drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The PN urged stronger enforcement of safety measures at roadworks and investment in infrastructure for alternative transport, including cycling and motorbiking, supported by stronger legal protections. In addition, they have demanded the creation of the long-promised Transport Safety Investigative Commission to help prevent repeat accidents.
