Mobile Unit Launched To Boost Cancer Research In Malta
Feb 7 2025 Share

The Cancer Research and Innovation Hub Malta (CRIHM) has introduced a Mobile Unit aimed at spreading awareness and education on cancer prevention across Malta and Gozo.

The initiative was officially launched by Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, who emphasised the crucial role of research and early detection in the fight against cancer.

This project underscores the government’s dedication to investing in education, screening, and research to combat one of the leading global health challenges.

Speaking at the inauguration, Azzopardi Tanti highlighted the importance of making information more accessible to the public.

“Cancer remains a worldwide challenge, and proactive steps in prevention, screening, and treatment are essential.

Through this Mobile Unit, we are bringing knowledge directly to the people, empowering them to take control of their health. The government is committed to this cause, allocating €1 million in funding for cancer research this year.”

Chairman of CRIHM, Prof. Christian Scerri, echoed the importance of early detection, stating that timely intervention greatly improves survival rates.

“Scientific research has consistently shown that catching cancer in its early stages significantly boosts survival rates. This Mobile Unit will act as a valuable educational tool, inspiring individuals to take proactive steps toward their well-being. It marks another milestone in our innovative mission to save lives.”

The initiative has also received support from Ħamrun Ħanin, a local organisation promoting social impact through sports.

Their Sports Unity project, which brings together various sports clubs across Malta, is actively collaborating to extend the Mobile Unit’s reach within communities.

Ian Debattista, Chairman of Ħamrun Ħanin, highlighted the power of unity in making a difference.

“This initiative embodies our belief that sports can be a force for good. Through Sports Unity, we are demonstrating that strength lies in collaboration. We are proud to contribute to such a meaningful cause in the fight against cancer.”

The Mobile Unit will offer information on screening, healthy lifestyles, and prevention, while reinforcing Malta’s ongoing efforts in cancer research and public health awareness.

By partnering with local organisations, this initiative ensures that crucial knowledge reaches as many people as possible, ultimately encouraging a healthier and more informed society.
