Momentum Launch Petition To Tackle Late-Night Tourist Disruptions

Partit Momentum has launched a national parliamentary petition aimed at tackling the late-night disruption caused by short-term tourist rentals.

The initiative comes in response to growing complaints from residents in areas such as Swieqi, St Julian’s, Sliema, Buġibba and Valletta, where late-night parties, littering and noise have made daily life increasingly unbearable.

Momentum chairperson Arnold Cassola criticised the authorities for failing to protect residents, saying, “It feels like the basic right to peace in your own home has been thrown out the window.”

He emphasised that the petition is not against tourism but rather in support of residents whose quality of life has been severely impacted.

The petition proposes several practical measures:

Start fining rowdy tourists and trash-dumpers on the spot;

Get more enforcement on our streets. We need to see them out there, especially late at night when the trouble starts;

Hold the property owners accountable. If an apartment is a constant source of complaints, the owner needs to face real penalties that get worse each time;

Make security deposits mandatory for all short-term lets. That way, if a guest causes trouble, the money for the fine is already there;

Tell tourists what the rules are upon arrival. A real public campaign that makes our laws and the consequences clear.

Cassola stressed that these are reasonable proposals to restore order in communities under pressure. “This is for every person in Malta and Gozo who feels ignored,” he said. “If you’re tired of sleepless nights and overflowing bins, sign the petition. It’s time for Parliament to act and return peace to our neighbourhoods.”
