Minn Pjazza għal Pjazza is a new cultural initiative that will see town squares across Malta and Gozo transformed into vibrant hubs of artistic activity. Designed to bring art and culture to the very heart of local communities, this project will fill public spaces with performances, local film screenings, community gatherings, and interactive events.

Announced during a press conference by the Minister for Cultural Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, alongside Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, the initiative seeks to make the arts more accessible while celebrating Maltese identity and encouraging active participation from residents.

The goal is to reimagine village squares as open, creative spaces that reflect the cultural heartbeat of the community. According to Minister Bonnici, this project will revitalise the social role of the square, historically the centre of village life, through quality events coordinated by local councils. He emphasised that Minn Pjazza għal Pjazza will offer unique experiences that blend art and community, reinforcing a shared cultural identity.

Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli added that each participating local council will receive around €25,000 in funding from the Local Government Division to deliver these events. She described the programme as one of several being introduced to empower councils to become dynamic cultural platforms.

In her concluding remarks, Zerafa Civelli called the initiative an investment in local councils, arts, culture, and community. “Most importantly, it’s an investment in people — creating more opportunities for residents to enjoy quality time with family and friends.”

Over the coming months, Minn Pjazza għal Pjazza events will be held in Birgu, Ħal Għargħur, Gżira, Senglea (Isla), Kalkara, Marsaskala, Mosta, Mtarfa, Pietà, Ħal Qormi, Qrendi, Rabat, San Lawrenz, Ta’ Kerċem, and Żejtun.
