The Minister for National Heritage, Arts, and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, visited the Salesian Theatre in Tas-Sliema to closely observe the transformation of this historic theatre into a vibrant cultural hub.

During the visit, Minister Bonnici was given a tour of the theatre by Fr. Paul Spiteri, President of the Executive Committee of the Salesian Theatre Voluntary Organization, and James Spiteri Tanti, Treasurer and Project Manager of the theatre.

They discussed the theatre’s journey, the challenges it has faced, and its aspirations for the future.

In recent years, the Salesian Theatre has received over €580,000 in funding from the Malta Arts Council.

This support has been crucial in ensuring the theatre’s survival and growth. Recent initiatives, such as full funding for an apprenticeship program and a three-year operational grant through the Cultural Organizations Investment Scheme, have helped the theatre continue its mission despite financial challenges.

During his visit, Minister Owen Bonnici praised the dedication and resilience of the Salesian Theatre’s leadership and emphasized the essential role the theatre plays in the cultural heritage of the country. “The discussions we had clearly highlighted the need for collaboration and continuous support to ensure the theatre’s long-term sustainability and ongoing development,” concluded Minister Bonnici.

James Spiteri Tanti added, “The Salesian Theatre opens its doors every day and has become a key point of reference for the community and cultural activities. The theatre’s leadership is working to address financial challenges by balancing revenue-generating activities with creative initiatives and collaborations with local producers and artists.”

The Cleaning and Maintenance Division (CMD) resolved 96% of reported cases in 2024, showcasing the effectiveness of significant investments and public collaboration.

This success was highlighted by Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and Parliamentary Secretary Glenn Bedingfield during a press conference.

CMD’s achievements were bolstered by €11 million invested in new machinery and the dedication of its staff.

CMD received 20,218 reports concerning littering and maintenance issues from citizens and public entities.

Most reports were submitted via the Clean & Upkeep app (10,945), phone calls (6,191), and emails (2,422). Minister Dalli attributed these results to public involvement, emphasising the importance of collective action in maintaining cleanliness and protecting the environment.

Parliamentary Secretary Bedingfield underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing public cleanliness through innovative projects like artificial intelligence.

He noted the strong link between cleanliness and quality of life, urging citizens to continue caring for their surroundings.

In 2024, CMD collected 57,600 tonnes of illegal waste, including 46,000 tonnes of construction debris, with 40,000 tonnes cleared from the Motorsports Centre to enable preparatory work.

The Xummiemu campaign boosted public engagement, increasing downloads of the Clean & Upkeep app from 842 in early 2024 to 3,216 after the campaign’s launch.

‘Consumers Ultimately Responsible To Dispose Waste Properly’ – MRU

'Consumers Ultimately Responsible To Dispose Waste Properly' - MRU

The Malta Ranger Unit took to social media to issue a statement after they received an overwhelming amount of reports from worried members of the public in regards to the recent sale of street food in Dingli, which has led to severe littering and degradation of the site.

‘Our Unit raised concerns already last week with the ERA and this morning, after seeing the site littered we called their Enforcement Team.’

The unit highlighted how everyone who carries out commercial activity in a Natura2000 site is obliged to obtain permits from ERA.

‘The reason for this, is for the site to be protected from degradation and saturation of environmental crimes (littering, offroading, excessive trampling etc). We have a concern that such a permit hasn’t been obtained and have asked ERA to confirm.’

‘ Although we acknowledge that the consumers are ultimately responsible to dispose of their waste properly, without the activity being monitored by the Authorities, it is evident that its saturation is causing an unavoidable issue of littering.’

Rangers reportedly cleaned the whole area after they found a large amount of litter connected with the commercial activity.
