Minister Owen Bonnici Meets Artists Behind L-Għanja Tal-Poplu

The Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, met with the singers, composers, authors, and committee members of Għanja tal-Poplu.

This festival, set to take place on Saturday, August 3rd, at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, will feature the participation of the Malta Concert Orchestra under the direction of Mro Joe Brown. The orchestral arrangements were made by various individuals, chosen by the participants themselves.

This year, 120 songs were submitted, from which 16 finalists were selected. The public can watch Għanja tal-Poplu live on the national station TVM on Saturday, August 3rd at 8:45 PM, with repeats scheduled for Sunday, August 4th at 2:00 PM and Wednesday, August 7th at 9:00 PM on TVM News+.

Minister Owen Bonnici wished all the finalists success in the competition and expressed his appreciation for the efforts and creativity of the singers, composers, and authors.

He noted that Għanja tal-Poplu is one of the most prestigious platforms for Maltese music, continuing to shape and promote the local musical culture.

He also emphasized the importance of supporting such initiatives, as they help safeguard and promote the Maltese language and identity through music.

This year, the festival will feature two juries: a popular jury and a professional jury, both of which will have an equal role in selecting the winning songs for the top three places. Special awards will also be given for best interpretation, best singer-songwriter, and best social theme.

This year’s special guests include Renato Micallef, who will be recognized for his contribution to Maltese music, as well as Christian Arding, the winner of the 2023 edition. The couple Joseph Galea and Antonella Galea Loffreda will be the hosts of this edition.

This festival is organized by the voluntary organization Għanja tal-Poplu in collaboration with Pjazza Teatru Rjal. Għanja tal-Poplu is supported by the Malta Council for the Arts.

This means that Washington’s biggest ever film will be a film filmed on one of the world’s smallest independent countries, our very own Malta!

Washington who has been in massive films and productions such as Remember The Titans, The Equalizer and Malcom X, revealed in awe that the crew managed to build the Colosseum just for the film.

The film is set to be released next November and will feature many Maltese sights as the backdrop of the Ancient Roman times that the film is situated and based in.

Miss Universe Malta 2024 Beatrice Njoya is celebrating her 40th birthday today!

‘Wishing you a wonderful day today and a great year ahead’, wrote Miss Universe Malta to celebrate her big day.

Nagoya became the oldest contestant to be crowned Miss Universe Malta at the age of 39 earlier this month.

She will also be the oldest contestant in this year’s edition of the international event, with the competition removing the age limit for contestants.

She is also the second contestant a non-Maltese woman got the title of Miss Universe Malta. This year’s contest is set to be held in Mexico – the first time since 2007.

After it was announced that the restoration of the Basilica of Chris the King belfry and portico will proceed through a €400,000 government grant.

The grant came after discussions with Ministers Byron Camilleri and Owen Bonnici.

With the funds secured, the parish plans to utilise the portico as a viewing platform for visitors and as a venue for events and fundraising activities. Additionally, a planned cafeteria will be established at ground level.

Fr. Camilleri stated, “This agreement is a win-win. The parish secures its goal of restoring the portico, while visitors will enjoy the spectacular view from the roof. With the cafeteria at ground level, we have successfully aimed to make the church’s maintenance more sustainable.”
