Roberta Metsola Reaffirms EU and USA Relationship Amid Ukraine Tension

Mar 2 2025 Share

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has reaffirmed the strength of the EU-US transatlantic partnership, stating that it “will last” despite recent tensions between Kyiv and Washington.

Her comments came just days after a heated exchange between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. The two leaders clashed over the need for negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom Zelensky called a “killer.”

Following the outburst, Metsola was among the first to express solidarity with Zelensky, urging him to “be strong, be brave, be fearless.” As European leaders gathered in London for crisis talks, Ukraine’s allies reinforced their commitment to supporting the country. Meanwhile, Malta has offered itself as a mediator for peace talks.

On Sunday, Metsola called on Malta to rise above partisan politics, stressing the need for decisive leadership. She also highlighted the importance of continued military and financial support for Ukraine, warning that if Kyiv were to fall, global security and stability would be at risk.

Emphasising Europe’s role as a peace project, she stated that real peace requires strength, action, and deterrence. Despite differences, Metsola insisted that the EU and US remain united in defending freedom and democracy.
