Asylum seekers living in Malta’s largest open centre at Hal Far have had to resort to sleeping outside due to their containers not having any fans. Being unable to buy fans for their rooms, the migrants, who are accommodated in containers that sleep four to six people, were forced to try and beat the scorching heat by sleeping outside. Malta has just gone through one of its record-breaking heatwaves, soaring as high as 41.3 degrees Celsius.
Speaking to Times of Malta, one Sudanese man living in the camp for two years stated that due to the virus, many migrants are not working and so do not have any money to buy fans. With many going to the sea or sitting under the trees during the day, the night did not provide any of them with any cool atmosphere.
