MIDI Project Off, Manoel Island To Become Park Says PM

Speaking during an interview this past weekend, Prime Minister Robert Abela confirmed that the MIDI Project which would have seen apartments built on Manoel Island is off.

Instead, Abela said, a national park will be established for everyone in Malta to enjoy.

This follows a recent back-and-forth as activists pushed for Manoel Island to return to the government.

Campaigners had argued that Manoel Island’s leaseholder had not fulfilled its contractual obligations to complete development works by March 2026, a deadline that could, if unmet, allow the government to rescind the 99-year concession.

Abela confirmed that talks between the government and MIDI has already established an end to the apartment project and works will begin instead on a new park.
