Metsola in Ohio: “Let’s Work Together for Peace and Democracy”

European Parliament President and Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola delivered a strong message of unity and democratic resilience during a speech in Dayton, Ohio, at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
Speaking from the site of the historic Dayton Accords, Metsola warned that democracy is under threat and urged Europe and the US to stand together: “We must step up to today’s moment of reckoning together – not retreat into fractured isolationism.”Metsola also recalled the critical role of the S.S. Ohio in saving Malta during WWII. “Our grandparents were days away from surrender when a crippled US tanker, the S.S. Ohio, reached our shores. It saved us. That is the spirit we need to rekindle today,” she said.
She called for continued cooperation, especially in the Western Balkans, stressing that peace, democracy, and transatlantic unity must remain guiding principles.
