Meridianbet FA Trophy Final: Showcase Of Football, Community & Commitment
May 20 2025 Share

The 2024/25 edition of the Meridianbet FA Trophy concluded in dramatic fashion on Sunday, May 18, with Hibernians FC defeating Birkirkara FC 2–1 at the National Stadium to lift their 11th title and book a spot in next season’s UEFA Conference League qualifiers.

But beyond the result, the night stood as a testament to Meridianbet’s commitment to Maltese football — not only as title sponsors but as active contributors to the sport’s growth and social impact in Malta.

Meridianbet, part of Nasdaq-listed Golden Matrix Group (GMGI), has steadily increased its involvement in Malta through long-term sports partnerships and local engagement.

A Tournament Elevated by Meridianbet

Throughout the season, the Meridianbet FA Trophy delivered intense competition and memorable moments. From the early knockout stages to the electrifying final, Meridianbet’s branding, organisation, and promotional efforts were present across every touchpoint — physical and digital.

This level of integration reflects Meridianbet’s growing role not just as a sponsor, but as a strategic partner for Maltese sport.

CSR in Action: €2,800 Donated to Inspire Malta

One of the standout features of this year’s competition was Meridianbet’s “Every Goal Matters” campaign — a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative linking each goal scored to real-world impact.

  • €100 was donated per goal during the quarter-finals
  • €200 per goal from the semi-finals and final

Across the final rounds, Meridianbet donated €2,800 to Inspire Malta, helping support their mission of assisting children and individuals with disabilities.

Stefan Pavlović, Director of Meridianbet Malta, commented:
“This final provided a strong platform to reinforce our values as a brand. We are pleased with how the competition was delivered and the opportunities it created to engage meaningfully with the local community.”

Byron Falzon, Operations Manager, added:
“From planning through to execution, our aim was to ensure that the Meridianbet FA Trophy stands out not just as a sporting competition, but as an event that reflects our broader commitment to social contribution and partnership.”

A Final to Remember

The match itself delivered on every level. Hibernians took an early lead through Apostolos Martinis before Birkirkara, down to 10 men, equalised via Maxuell Maia. But it was Kurt Shaw’s late header that sealed victory, sending Hibs fans into celebration and capping off a thrilling campaign.

Looking Ahead

Meridianbet’s role in this year’s FA Trophy has reinforced its position as a leading advocate for sports development and social responsibility in Malta. From fan engagement and sponsorship visibility to real contributions through CSR, this final was about more than a trophy — it was about building a lasting legacy in Maltese sport.

As the football season winds down, Meridianbet remains committed to supporting future initiatives that blend sport, community, and impact.

The company operates in Malta as part of Golden Matrix Group (GMGI), helping bring structure and continuity to its efforts across the region.

Children Of Inmates Still Meeting Them In Prison, PN MP Says

Children Of Inmates Still Meeting Them In Prison, PN MP Says
May 20 2025 Share

Taking to social media, Nationalist MP Darren Carabott highlighted how, despite Malta having an already set up building aiming at family-friendly encounters between children and their guardians in prison, there are still cases where kids are meeting them at Malta’s prison.

MP Carabott said that this should not be the case as we should, as a society, work to safeguard and give children the tools they need to grow and prosper.

Whatever the guardians did to end up in prison, Carabott argued, the kids are innocent. He said that he’s seen this system work abroad and that this could be the case in Malta.

He urged the Minister responsible to ensure that this is the case with all kids meeting their guardians who may be in prison.

Even the guards in prisons abroad, Carabott said, are dressed in day-to-day clothing so that the kids can relax and play with their parents during the visit.

Pastors In Favour Of Euthanasia Fail To Honour Their Duty, Says Archbishop

Pastors In Favour Of Euthanasia Fail To Honour Their Duty, Says Archbishop
May 20 2025 Share

Taking to social media, Archbishop Charles Scicluna said that pastors who express themselves in favour of Euthanasia ‘fail to honour their duty as Catholic shepherds.’

Scicluna described euthanasia as a ‘deliberate act to terminate human life before its natural end’, and said that ‘the People of God expect to receive light on the truth of the Gospel of Life from their Priests and Bishops.’

Currently in Malta, a public consultation about Assisted Voluntary Euthanasia (VAE) has been launched.

This refers to a legal, voluntary process wherein the patient requests to end their life due to unbearable suffering.

The patient is assisted by a medical professional and takes the final action themselves. With various safeguards in place, the patients must, amongst other things be in full mental capacity, suffering from a medically terminal illness and acting out of their own free will.

With the consultation open until July 2nd, 2025, the government is encouraging all citizens to share their opinions through the official website www.facts.gov.mt
