MEPs Set To Negotiate Stronger EU Traveller Protection Rules

The European Parliament has given strong backing to its negotiating position on new EU rules for travel packages and consumer compensation, led by Maltese MEP Alex Agius Saliba.
International talks with the Council on the final rules are set to begin on 24 September.
The reforms aim to clarify travellers’ rights on cancellations, refunds, and repatriation if a tour operator fails or unforeseen events disrupt holidays. Refund vouchers will be harmonised and regulated, allowing travellers to refuse vouchers and claim cash refunds within 14 days. Vouchers must be valid for 12 months, covered by insolvency guarantees, and give holders priority when choosing services.
Agius Saliba said: “Consumers must be able to cancel packages and receive full refunds within 14 days, enabling them to rebook. Strong enforcement is crucial, which is why we are introducing a mandatory complaint mechanism.”
The Parliament adopted the position with 535 votes in favour, 36 against, and 47 abstentions.
