Labour MEP Daniel Attard has confirmed that Belgian authorities are seeking to lift his parliamentary immunity as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged lobbying and bribery involving Chinese technology company Huawei.

The request is linked to a football match Attard attended last September at Anderlecht’s stadium, where he was seated in a Huawei-sponsored VIP box. Attard says he accepted the invitation from his Hungarian assistant and was unaware at the time that the tickets had been provided by Huawei or that a lobbyist affiliated with the company would be present.

During a recent interview on RTK103, Attard said he welcomed reports that Belgian police had recorded conversations in the VIP box, describing it as “good news” that may help confirm his version of events. He noted that the lobbyist expressed interest in further discussion during the match, leading to a follow-up meeting in Strasbourg. Attard maintains that this meeting complied with European Parliament rules and took place before Huawei became the subject of a formal investigation.

Attard has written to European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, requesting the waiver of his immunity in order to cooperate fully with Belgian authorities. He has also informed the leadership of the Socialists & Democrats Group and says he is prepared to provide all relevant information.

In a separate video, the MEP thanked everyone who supported him during these times, saying that this will motivate him to continue working for not just the Maltese on an EU level, but also those suffering injustices. Attard said that he will continue to push for the ending of suffering in Gaza, saying that the resistance against the humanitarian crisis and war crimes being committed is increasing, and that he will continue to champion the voices of those suffering.
