Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works, Chris Bonett, has announced a major regeneration project in Marsaxlokk, with a total investment of over €8 million. The initiative includes the redevelopment of the Marsaxlokk Aquatic Sports Club, the extension of Għar l-Aħmar beach, and the reconstruction of roads in the area.

At the heart of the project is the complete rebuilding of the Marsaxlokk Aquatic Sports Club. The existing building will be demolished and replaced with a modern sports and community complex, featuring a training and water polo pool, a smaller recreational pool, a gym, fitness facilities, and dedicated rooms for athletes.

The project also involves the expansion and regeneration of the sandy beach at Għar l-Aħmar. The beach will be extended by approximately 15 metres towards the lower side, creating a larger and safer space for swimming and families visiting the area. Natural sand from the internal Marsaxlokk beach will be used, and a new stone berm will be constructed to protect the beach from waves and currents.

Minister Bonett explained that the investment reflects the Government’s vision of infrastructure going beyond roads. “Infrastructure does not just mean new roads; it also means spaces that serve our society and communities,” he said. “This project in Marsaxlokk, as we are seeing in other localities such as Msida, Marsaskala, and Buġibba, demonstrates our commitment to regenerating central areas of towns to create better spaces where people can meet and spend time in a safer and more beautiful environment.”

Steve Ellul, Chief Executive Officer of Infrastructure Malta, highlighted the importance of vision, planning, and collaboration in projects like this. He expressed gratitude to the Ministry, the Infrastructure Malta team, the Marsaxlokk Local Council, the sports community, and residents, all of whom played a role in shaping the project.

The press conference was also attended by Steven Grech, Mayor of Marsaxlokk, who welcomed the initiative and stressed its importance for the community.
