Marine Biologist Alan Deidun Captures Garfish ‘imsella’ In Action

Marine biologist Alan Deidun recently shared an intriguing observation: the garfish (Belone belone), known locally in Malta as ‘imsella’, may be facing new challenges in the Mediterranean.
This Atlantic and Mediterranean species can reach up to one metre in length and weigh as much as 1.4 kg.
It is a formidable hunter, reputed to leap out of the water when hooked, and in the Black Sea, it is known to feed on anchovies. In recent years, however, garfish populations in the Mediterranean have declined markedly.
While the causes are likely multifaceted ranging from overfishing to habitat changes Deidun raises an interesting possibility: could the recent proliferation of the bluespotted cornetfish (Fistularia commersonii) be playing a role?
