Man Caught Illegally Spearfishing In Għadira Swimming Zone
Local

An individual was caught illegally spearfishing before sunrise within the swimming zone at Għadira Bay, Mellieħa, at around 5:00 in the morning, the Malta Ranger Unit reported.

The person was spotted moving through the area with a powerful torch, prompting concern and immediate attention from authorities.

The activity violates multiple laws and regulations. Firstly, fishing within a designated swimming zone is prohibited under the Transport Malta Notice to Mariners. Secondly, the entire bay is protected under an Environment Protection Order issued by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) due to its importance as a turtle nesting site.

Thirdly, the use of lights for fishing within harbours and bays is illegal under Fisheries Legislation.

Finally, spearfishing before sunrise breaches European Union regulations.

Such actions are not only illegal but also pose significant risks to public safety and marine biodiversity.

Fishing in protected zones, particularly at night, is regarded as an unsustainable and dangerous practice, especially when swimmers may be present in the area.

The case will be formally reported to the relevant authorities, including Transport Malta, ERA, and the Fisheries Department. Rangers have gathered sufficient evidence and documentation to hold the individual responsible for breaching these regulations.
