A 40-year-old man from Floriana was remanded in custody Monday morning after was charged for attacking his partner with a broken glass shard during a domestic argument.

A father of two, the man appeared before a magistrate this morning accused of attacking the woman, inflicting grievous injuries on her as well as subjecting her to sexual advances.

Police had received reports of shouting and sounds of conflict from the accused’s residence. Officers dispatched to investigate found the alleged victim’s mother banging on the door and screaming to be let in.

The police forced open the door, discovering the accused unclothed and attacking the victim with a piece of glass. The injuries were inflicted on the woman by glass from a broken mirror.

Asked by the accused’s defence lawyer, the inspector revealed that the woman had never filed a police report about the accused. However, the inspector said that the footage from the arresting officers’ body cam was self-explanatory.

Bail for the accused was requested against objections from the inspector in view of the nature of the charges. The victim had not wanted the police to prosecute the man as he was ‘going through a rough patch’ and had two children.

The lawyer claimed the case had been completely invented by the prosecution, accusing the inspector of dismissing expert advice and extrapolating the charges. The court denied the request, saying that this could mean that the accused might tamper with evidence were he to be released.

‘When the sea stings’ wrote Valletta Cultural Agency chairman Jason Micallef as he revealed the latest street art installation in the capital city.

Decorating South Street (Triq Nofsinhar), the installation forms part of a cultural programme by the cultural agency which sees a new installation every three months.

‘It’s rare, or never, that we see jellyfish looking so wonderful that you have to take a photo of them’ said Micallef. The caption was even supported by commenters on the post, who said that it’s much better to see jellyfish like so instead of when going to the beach for a swim.

This comes as Maltese waters get invaded by a substantial amount of jellyfish, stinging many people and prompting a purple warning flag to be erected at Golden Bay.

These Valletta jellyfish however are colourful and luminescent, transforming the pathway for visitors of Malta’s capital city. ‘Make sure to visit them when you’re in Valletta!’ urged the chairman.

Urgent warning issued as jellyfish invade Maltese waters

Urgent warning issued as jellyfish invade Maltese waters

The HPF Ranger Unit issued an urgent public warning, quoting the Malta Red Cross, over the increase in jellyfish in Maltese waters, particularly Golden Bay.

A purple flag, signifying the presence of jellyfish, was erected at the popular Maltese bay. Many beachgoers are being stung by jellyfish as they flock to the beaches. The ranger unit assured the public that they will be patrolling beaches to help with any nasty stings.

Speaking with TVM, marine biologist Alan Deidun confirmed that there are more jellyfish than usual for this time of the year. The reason, he said, is the cold water.

Deidun said that during the Easter period, we usually see large swathes of adult jellyfish as they hatch from eggs in the beginning of February. However, different brown jellyfish are being spotted across all Maltese bays.

The annoying sea creatures are set to decline as the summer goes on, but he still warned people that they will still be spotted here and there.

To address stings, one should not dab it in vinegar, alcohol or fresh water. The sting should be rinsed with sea water, and then a mixture of baking soda should be added for about 5 minutes. A credit card could then be used to remove tentacles stuck to the skin, followed by ice placed on the sting.
