Urgent warning issued as jellyfish invade Maltese waters

Urgent warning issued as jellyfish invade Maltese waters

The HPF Ranger Unit issued an urgent public warning, quoting the Malta Red Cross, over the increase in jellyfish in Maltese waters, particularly Golden Bay.

A purple flag, signifying the presence of jellyfish, was erected at the popular Maltese bay. Many beachgoers are being stung by jellyfish as they flock to the beaches. The ranger unit assured the public that they will be patrolling beaches to help with any nasty stings.

Speaking with TVM, marine biologist Alan Deidun confirmed that there are more jellyfish than usual for this time of the year. The reason, he said, is the cold water.

Deidun said that during the Easter period, we usually see large swathes of adult jellyfish as they hatch from eggs in the beginning of February. However, different brown jellyfish are being spotted across all Maltese bays.

The annoying sea creatures are set to decline as the summer goes on, but he still warned people that they will still be spotted here and there.

To address stings, one should not dab it in vinegar, alcohol or fresh water. The sting should be rinsed with sea water, and then a mixture of baking soda should be added for about 5 minutes. A credit card could then be used to remove tentacles stuck to the skin, followed by ice placed on the sting.

More health concerns for Pope Francis as he cancels trip to Africa

More health concerns for Pope Francis as he cancels trip to Africa
Jun 13 2022 Share

Pope Francis has cancelled a trip to Africa due to a persisting knee problem and has thus continued to raise further concerns about the health of the 85-year-old pontiff.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni said that the planned visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan in early July have been cancelled.

This was at the request of his doctors in order not to jeopardise the results of the therapy that he is undergoing for his knee, with the trip set to be rescheduled for a later date.

Francis appeared using a wheelchair in public for the first time in early May, having cancelled several engagements since having a minor operation to treat knee pain. The Vatican has not revealed what the problem truly is, but the Pope himself told Corriere della Sera last month that he needed a minor intervention with infiltration due to a strained ligament.

The pope has an upcoming six-day trip to Canada planned for the 24th of July, as well as a September visit to Kazakhstan. Rumours have been circulating that Francis could, like his predecessor Benedict XVI, resign from his post.

Following this, a new Pope would of course have to be re-elected. Among the possible candidates is Cardinal Mario Grech who is being mentioned among a number of cardinals who stand a chance of succeeding Francis.

The Times of London reported that the succession will be a battle between two factions as conservatives allegedly loathe Francis’ ‘mercy-before-dogma’ style, with the Pope connecting more to his more liberal fans and supporters.

Charles and Ron van Maarschalkerweerd Borg, whose names have become an iconic staple for Malta’s fashion world, are celebrating their 30th anniversary, with a new apparel line released in celebration.

With a romantic photograph portraying them earlier on in their relationship posted to Charles’s Instagram, the two have been through a lot together, touring even international fashion shows with their creative works and designs.

The Charles&Ron brand has more than once stolen the show at various shows, with the noteworthy Fall/Winter 2020 collection ‘L’Arlogg tal-Lira’ making waves in New York. The brand was even eyed by pop sensation Ariana Grande as she donned gloves during an episode of The Voice.

Speaking during a 2020 interview with the Sunday Circle’s Iggy Fenech, in celebration of their 28th anniversary during Pride Month, the two articulated some of their relationship’s past.

Ron explained to Fenech that they had met at a club in Amsterdam in 1992 when he had seen Charles looking a bit tired on the dance floor. Charles was convinced to stay for an extra week and the rest is history.

Fenech said that such relationships remind them of how many could have had this bliss but were denied it by inequality and ignorance. ‘So let us celebrate all that has been achieved, but also work harder at giving others the key to happiness.’
