The Nationalist Party leader was rather busy on Friday night after hitting the busy streets of Valletta and St. Julian’s to mix and mingle with Malta’s youth.

Bernard Grech was seen visiting Strait Street in Valletta and Triq Ross in St. Julian’s, both of which are typical weekend hangouts for Malta’s younger generations. Crowds flocked around the PN leader to grab a quick selfie as he continued with his campaign trail leading up to the March 26 general election.

Grech has repeatedly highlighted the importance of youth in Malta’s development and him taking it a step further on Friday night may just be a testament to that belief. This week, both party leaders also visited the G.F. Abela Junior College in Msida, embracing the waves of young supporters enrolled there.

Where you in Valletta or St. Julian’s on Friday night?

FATF to visit Malta to verify ‘substantial’ completion of action plan to get off grey list

FATF to visit Malta to verify 'substantial' completion of action plan to get off grey list
Mar 5 2022 Share

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has stated that Malta’s action plan to get off the grey-listing is ‘substantially’ completed.

An official statement reads that back in June 2021, Malta had made the commitment to work with the FATF and MONEYVAL to “strengthen the effectiveness of its Anti Money Laundering and Countering (AML) and Terrorism Financing regime (CFT)”. It went on to reveal that its action plan is ‘substantially completed’ and warrants an on-site visit for verification. With regards to reforms, the report highlighted 3 key points;

  1. Accurately showing information for companies based in Malta, allowing authorities to crack down on inaccurate ownership information and sanction gatekeepers who do not comply.
  2. Enhancing the use and operations of the government’s Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit to support authorities pursuing money-laundering cases and criminal tax. This will include clarification of the roles and responsibilities held by the Revenue Commissioner and the FIAU.
  3. Increasing FIAU’s analysis oF criminal tax offences to help local law enforcement detect and crack down on tax evasion and its risks.

The FATF plenary will meet in Berlin in June.

Is Malta on its way to exiting the grey list?

Abela and Grech will officially debate on March 16th ahead of election

Abela and Grech will officially debate on March 16th ahead of election
Mar 4 2022 Share

The electoral campaign’s first debate between Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition leader Bernard Grech is set to occur on March 16th 2022.

Set to be hosted by the Malta Chamber, the debate will be happening live on Facebook at 11am, with members of the business community invited to attend.

The debate will be hosted and moderated by former journalist Rachel Attard. This comes as Robert Abela evades debate invitations made by independent media platforms.

The university of Malta debate is still yet to announce a date as this was revealed by Robert Abela to occur. This also comes as the chamber publishes its pre-election document, featuring 100 recommendations which address several issues such as economic recovery, infrastructure and good governance.

The Labour Party is also yet to unveil its electoral manifesto, something which the Nationalist Party have hit at as, according to them, it shows unpreparedness.
