The first-ever Maltese Sausage Fest was held at the Public Abattoir, celebrating one of Malta’s most iconic traditional foods, iz-zalzett Malti.

The event coincided with Maltese Sausage Day and featured a record-breaking 77.45-metre-long Maltese sausage prepared by Nigret Butcher, officially setting a new national record.

A wide variety of Maltese sausage-based dishes were offered by both public and private entities, ranging from ftajjar and pastizzi to wraps, ravioli, and even doughnuts.

The National Centre for Viticulture and Oenology paired Maltese wines with these dishes, showcasing the versatility of local produce.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo praised the event, highlighting how it united various stakeholders to celebrate and promote a traditional Maltese product.

“This fest is more than just a celebration — it’s a tribute to the essential role of food in our society,” he said, emphasising the government’s commitment to preserving traditions while supporting the private sector.

Public Abattoir Director General Stefan Cachia noted that the festival builds on ongoing efforts to revive traditional meat-based Maltese products and present them in innovative ways.

The event also featured live music and family activities centred around the Maltese sausage, drawing a strong turnout from the public.
