Maltese film The Theft of Caravaggio has earned international recognition after being featured on the iconic Kodak Shoot Film Instagram page — a platform that has previously showcased major works involving global stars such as Bad Bunny and Kendrick Lamar.

The film’s writer, director, and producer Joshua Cassar Gaspar spoke to Kodak’s Motion Picture Film Community about the inspiration behind the project and the artistic value of shooting on celluloid. He highlighted how Malta’s natural beauty and historic architecture played a vital role in the film’s visual storytelling.

“The stunning scenery and natural light in Malta, the majestic golden hues of St. John’s Co-Cathedral, and the depth in the characters’ expressions—the way light and shadow shaped their faces—all came alive in a way that only celluloid can capture,” Cassar Gaspar said. “We trusted the discipline and our instincts, and in return, film gave our story emotional weight and a timeless visual language.”

The feature marks a proud moment for Maltese cinema, as The Theft of Caravaggio gains a spotlight on a global stage, showcasing both the island’s creative talent and its rich cultural and architectural backdrops.
