Maltese Police Assist During United Nations Conference

Four officers from the Malta Police Force have returned from Nice, France, where they assisted in security operations during the United Nations Ocean Conference, held recently in the southeastern coastal city, at the request of the French National Police.

With thousands of attendees, including high-level delegations, the Maltese officers were stationed in various strategic locations around Nice.

Their duties included traffic and crowd control, as well as searches of suspicious individuals.

In Nice, Sergeants Carlos Farrugia and Christian Bonello, along with Constables Jurgen Portelli and Omar Sharif, worked side by side with the French Police, participating in both vehicle and foot patrols.

The four Maltese officers also responded to a bomb threat and a traffic incident, while one of the officers was involved in assisting with a case related to cannabis trafficking.

The request for the Malta Police Force to send its officers to assist another country highlights the strong level of collaboration between the respective law enforcement bodies, as well as the professionalism demonstrated by the Maltese police officers.

Thousands Attend Lejla Ma’ Tal-Films At Fort Ricasoli

Thousands of Maltese attended Lejla ma’ tal-Films organised by the Malta Film Commission at Fort Ricasoli.

As this year marks one hundred years of film history in our country, those who attended could view costumes, props and sets from films produced in Malta.

Parts of the set from Gladiator II, which achieved box office revenues of nearly half a billion euros from cinemas worldwide, were on display at the fort.

The film Gladiator was also screened at the fort itself, where people could watch the film surrounded by the place where it was shot.

As part of the programme, there were various exhibitions, storytelling, musical performances and experiences related to films and their production in Malta.

Later this month, the Mediterrane Film Festival will launch its third edition. The festival, which will take place between the 21st and 29th of June 2025, aims to promote Malta as a production destination for international film business, attract foreign investment, and provide a platform for Mediterranean films.

The festival programme includes 55 film screenings, discussion panels, workshops, masterclasses and the Golden Bee Awards, among other events.

Safety At Sea Campaign Launched To Promote Awareness

The Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, together with Transport Malta, has launched the latest edition of its annual campaign ‘Safety at Sea’ during a press conference at Fajtata in Marsaskala. The initiative aims to raise awareness of maritime safety during summer, when thousands of people engage in water-based activities for sport and leisure.

The campaign will include educational material, online information, social media outreach and partnerships with local councils, sports organisations and tourism operators. The message will target all age groups, including both Maltese and foreign residents or visitors.

Minister Chris Bonett described the sea as a national treasure and a central part of Maltese life. He stressed that while everyone has the right to enjoy the sea, they also have a responsibility to ensure their safety and that of others. He also praised recent improvements to infrastructure in swimming zones, particularly at Wied il-Għajn, thanking the workers of Infrastructure Malta and the Tourism Zones Regeneration Agency.

Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia said the authority will increase efforts to promote safe swimming, responsible boating and diving practices. He added that enforcement officers will carry out inspections at sea and on beaches to prevent rule violations and protect public safety throughout the season.
