Maltese Olympians celebrate achievements with Olympics tattoo

Aug 17 2021 Share

Many Olympians decide to commemorate the games by tattooing the famous 5 rings on their body, and that’s exactly what Maltese athletes Sasha Gatt and Yazmin Zammit Stevens did. This year’s Olympics were the first games for both athletes, with Yazmin becoming the first Maltese woman to take part in weightlifting.

Yazmin Zammit Stevens came in 13th place in the 64kg weightlifting competition. In her Instagram post she stated that she ‘Can’t wait to tell [her] kids one day that their mum was Malta’s first woman to be a weightlifting Olympian’. Young Maltese swimmer Sasha Gatt also got a tattoo to commemorate her amazing accomplishment. The 16-year old competed in both 400m and 1500m races and ranked in 22nd and 33rd place respectively.

Both athletes will be hoping to reach the Olympic milestone again, this time happening closer to home at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Get ready for first rain showers to hit before Vitorja feast

Get ready for first rain showers to hit before Vitorja feast
Aug 17 2021 Share

Malta is set to experience its first rain showers between the 30th of August and the 6th of September, right before Victory Day (Vitorja). The start of September is set to contrast the beginning of August, which saw an intense heat wave hit the Maltese islands.

But it seems as though the feast that celebrates a threefold victory over foreign invaders from Malta’s history will be celebrated with that residue rain smell and a possible refreshing after heatwave after heatwave.

The map shared by Maltese Islands Weather also indicates instability across the central Mediterranean in terms of weather patterns. Despite seeming far away, such indications have rarely been proven wrong.

Aug 17 2021 Share

After having spent two years in preventive custody, alleged drug kingpin Jordan Azzopardi has been granted bail against a €150,000 personal guarantee. Azzopardi, 31, has been held in preventive custody at Corradino Prisons since 2019 after being accused of being the mastermind behind a nationwide drug distribution network. He is facing 15 charges, including trafficking heroin, cocaine and cannabis.

Azzopardi is the self-proclaimed Malta’s very own ‘El Chapo’, due to the large amount of drugs he has produced and his last-minute escapes. His escape came after he lost his pet dog and his posting on Facebook asking people for help set off a chain of events which according to One News led to his capture. Azzopardi’s girlfriend is also accused of similar charges, with Azzopardi being prohibited from approaching the coast or airport, ordered to deposit his passport, signing a bail book daily and observing a curfew.
