Maltese Mothers’ Average Age 29.8 When Having First Child

According to Eurostat, In 2023, the average age of women in Malta giving birth to their first child was 29.8 years, aligning with the EU average. However, Malta stands out in other fertility statistics.
In particular, Malta ranked among the top EU countries for first-time births, with 54.1% of babies born to first-time mothers—well above the EU average of 46.4%. This reflects a broader European trend of later motherhood, with countries like Italy (31.8 years) and Ireland (31.6 years) reporting even higher average ages for first births.
Furthermore, Malta has a notable share of foreign-born mothers. In 2023, approximately one-third (36%) of children born in Malta were delivered by mothers who were not born in the country. This places Malta among the EU nations with the highest proportion of births to foreign-born mothers.
