Administrative Inquiry into Drug Theft at Ħal Safi Barracks Published

Mar 19 2025 Share

Prime Minister Robert Abela took to Facebook to announce that he had received Judge Valenzia’s report on the Ħal Safi Barracks drug theft earlier in the day and published it immediately.

He acknowledged that while the theft had sparked significant discussion, some had sought to politicise the incident, using it as an opportunity to attack the Government, Minister Byron Camilleri, the Armed Forces, and the Police.

Abela stated that the report confirmed arrests were made within 48 hours, court proceedings had commenced, and Judge Valenzia’s inquiry cleared Minister Camilleri of any political responsibility.

He added that the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) are addressing the failures, with all necessary disciplinary measures expected to follow.

In response, the Nationalist Party (PN) issued a statement clarifying that it had never suggested Minister Byron Camilleri was personally involved in the theft, sarcastically noting that “no one in Malta or Gozo is calling for his resignation because he was supposed to be on guard duty watching over a container full of drugs.”

However, the PN stressed that national security remains the direct responsibility of Robert Abela’s Government and Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri.

The party insisted that Camilleri is ultimately accountable for the breakdown within the AFM’s command structure and continues to symbolise national insecurity, reiterating calls for him to assume political responsibility.

Archbishop Scicluna expressed deep sorrow, entrusting “such a faithful and loving pastor to the mercy of the Good Shepherd.” His passing was announced on Wednesday, coinciding with the feast of St Joseph.
