Maltese Firefighters Help Battle Wildfire In Portugal

Civil Protection Malta has been on the ground in Portugal over the past few days as part of the EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid Mechanism’s Pre-Positioning Programme.
A team of 40 officers was deployed to assist Portuguese authorities in tackling a large-scale wildfire in Vale de Cerdeira. This marks the fifth international mission Maltese firefighters have taken part in over the past two years.
In a statement shared on social media, Civil Protection Malta said that its officers have been working for more than 60 hours alongside the Força Especial de Proteção Civil. The operation has focused on containing the wildfire and limiting its impact on both lives and the environment.
“ Their dedication and teamwork in these challenging conditions highlight the strength of European solidarity and the shared commitment to protecting lives and the environment,” the agency noted.
The mission is part of broader EU cooperation efforts designed to strengthen joint responses to natural disasters. Malta’s contribution once again reflects the country’s growing role in international emergency support, with its firefighters standing side by side with European counterparts to face increasingly severe environmental challenges.
