Food does not only affect physical health, but also mental health

Oct 10 2021 Share

Food and mental health go hand in hand and a bad diet does not only affect the physical aspects of one’s being but also the mental aspects.

The intestine, which is the body’s digestive system, is an extensive organ which few know the relevance to mental health. Practicing health psychologist Danica Cassar stated that anxiety, which is a common reaction, may be triggered by the digestive system.

Cassar stated that the stomach is like our ‘second brain’, with which we feel certain emotions and thus, there is communication between the brain and the stomach. This means that food and consumption may affect mental health, so excessively sugary food, excessive smoking and alcohol may decrease the bacteria within the stomach which protects us from being anxious, stress and upset.
