MaltaPost Temporarily Halts Parcel Shipments To USA
Local

MaltaPost p.l.c. has announced the temporary suspension of all parcel and goods shipments to the United States of America and its territories, effective from 10:00 hrs on Saturday, 23 August 2025.

Customers wishing to send final items must deposit them at the Head Office in Marsa between 07:00 and 10:00 hrs on that date. Letters and documents to the U.S. should no longer be placed in street post boxes.

Instead, an express service through MaltaPost’s MEI product is available for urgent letters and documents, purchasable at Post Offices.

The suspension follows an Executive Order from the U.S. President eliminating the duty-free threshold on international postal shipments from 29 August 2025.

Under the new system, all items sent to the United States will be subject to customs duties regardless of value. Cargo partners and airlines have consequently halted carriage of U.S.-bound mail until clear technical and operational procedures are finalised.

MaltaPost explained the suspension is necessary to allow time to design and test new compliance processes.

Postal operators across Europe are collaborating to meet the new requirements, although significant questions remain, including how duties will be collected and what data must be provided to U.S. Customs.

Goods and parcel shipments through MEI will also be suspended from close of business on Monday, 25 August 2025 until further notice. Incoming mail from the United States to Malta is unaffected.
