The Malta Women’s Lobby (MWL) has strongly criticised Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) for giving media personality Ricky Caruana a platform on a public service channel, despite his history of sharing what the lobby described as “false, mediaeval and blatantly misogynistic” views on social media.

In a statement issued on Friday, the MWL said that PBS was effectively “rewarding discrimination with money and visibility” and accused the broadcaster of prioritising ignorance and hate over knowledge and integrity.

The lobby questioned how an individual with no formal credentials or training in media or journalism had been offered airtime funded by taxpayers, including women.

It said that legitimising sexist commentary under the guise of free speech or impartiality represents a profound misunderstanding of both principles.

According to MWL, free speech does not mean all opinions are equally well-informed, and impartiality does not require balancing prejudice with knowledge.

The organisation also criticised Caruana’s comments for ridiculing women’s contributions to society, dismissing feminist achievements, promoting workplace segregation by gender, and trivialising sexual harassment.

MWL warned that public service media has a duty to act as a counterweight to social division, not to amplify harmful views.

The lobby called on PBS to urgently review its decision-making processes and ensure that public funds are not used to promote discriminatory content.

MWL emphasised that public service platforms must serve all members of society equally and reflect shared humanity rather than eroding it.

Ricky Caruana Responds To ‘Character Assassination’

Ricky responded to the statement, saying that this was nothing but a character assassination and said that his opinions he shared after Budget 2026 were simply a proposal that aims to tackle parents having to overwork and not have time for their kids. He said that his statements were misinterpreted by ‘feminists’ who took his statements to mean that women should stay at home instead of going out to work.

Ricky said parents and couples have no time to spend together anymore due to work, but he also said that workplace ‘relationships’ which could lead to extra-marital affairs could lead to relationships breaking apart.
