The Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Animal Rights, led by Minister Anton Refalo, has reiterated its ongoing commitment to combating illegal fishing in Maltese waters, a mission that extends beyond the lampuki (dolphinfish) season.

Over recent years, Maltese authorities have achieved significant milestones, including introducing recommendations and regulations at Mediterranean and European levels. Additional EFCA vessels now inspect areas known for illegal lampuki fishing, with one currently patrolling near Sicily.

The Ministry’s proactive work and credibility with the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) and DG MARE prompted a visit from European Commissioner for Fisheries, Costas Kadis, in June. The Commissioner met local fishermen to understand the challenges they face firsthand.

Minister Refalo emphasised the Government’s commitment, “We are dedicated not only to defending Maltese and Gozitan fishermen but also to safeguarding the sustainability and future of our fishing sector. The Ministry will continue to protect the rights of our fishermen and their families throughout the year, not just during the lampuki season.

Dr Alicia Bugeja Said, Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, played a key role in shaping Malta’s policies in these areas, ensuring sustainable practices and protecting the interests of local communities.

Recently, she joined discussions with Minister Anton Refalo and European Commissioner Costas Kadis to address challenges facing Maltese fishermen, including illegal fishing by foreign vessels and the protection of Maltese nets.

The Ministry continues coordinated efforts with the Armed Forces of Malta and EFCA to enforce regulations and monitor illegal activities, in line with European legislation and the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM).
