Malta has officially submitted its candidacy to serve on UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee for the 2027–2031 term.

This marks an important step in the country’s cultural diplomacy. The announcement also coincides with the 60th anniversary of Malta’s membership in UNESCO.

The World Heritage Committee, created in 1972, plays a central role in protecting cultural and natural heritage across the globe.

Composed of 21 elected countries, it oversees the prestigious World Heritage List and manages the international fund dedicated to safeguarding sites of outstanding value.

Elections will take place in November 2027, following several years of dialogue and negotiations among the 196 signatory states of the UNESCO Convention.

Owen Bonnici, Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government, explained that Malta will work diligently in the lead-up to the elections to strengthen its chances of being chosen.

If elected, Malta’s representation will bring together both experienced diplomats and local cultural heritage experts.

Bonnici stressed that this candidacy reflects Malta’s commitment to multilateralism and the protection of cultural treasures worldwide.

Currently, Malta has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni, the Megalithic Temples of Malta, and the capital city of Valletta.
