Malta Reaffirms Commitment To Peace And Dialogue At OSCE 50th Anniversary Conference

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Hon. Ian Borg, emphasised the importance of dialogue, moral leadership, and civil society engagement in achieving lasting peace and stability.

Speaking at the Helsinki+50 Conference, hosted by Finland under its OSCE Chairpersonship, Dr Borg reflected on the enduring significance of the 1975 Helsinki Final Act, which laid the foundation for cooperation between East and West during the Cold War.
“The principles agreed in Helsinki remain vital today, as we face threats such as Russia’s war in Ukraine, cyberattacks, and the climate crisis.” Dr Borg said.
He also highlighted Malta’s historical contribution to the Helsinki process, noting that in 1975, Malta had successfully advocated for the Mediterranean Chapter, recognising the region’s key role in European security.

“As Chair of the OSCE Asian Partners for Cooperation, Malta continues to build bridges beyond Europe, including with the Indo-Pacific.” he added.
Dr Borg called for greater efforts to combat social polarisation, support democratic resilience, and empower civil society, which he described as “a pillar of free, tolerant societies”.
