A magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck Malta late Thursday night, with tremors felt across the islands. The quake occurred at 11:57 p.m., with its epicentre located approximately 16 kilometres off Mellieħa. The Seismic Monitoring & Research Group at the University of Malta recorded the event, noting that the shaking lasted for several seconds.
Residents from various localities, including St. Paul’s Bay and Cospicua, reported feeling the tremors, with some describing furniture shaking and pets reacting to the disturbance. Despite widespread reports of the quake, no immediate damage or injuries were reported, according to police and the Civil Protection Department.
This event is notable as it marks one of the rare instances in recent memory where an earthquake’s epicenter was so close to Malta. The tremor occurred just as hundreds of people were gathered in Mellieħa to start a charity walk to Floriana throughout the night in aid of Puttinu Cares.
The earthquake’s depth was reported at 5 kilometers, indicating a shallow seismic event. Shallow quakes often result in more noticeable surface shaking, which aligns with the widespread reports from residents.
