Malta Ranked Among Europe’s Cleanest Countries For Swimming, Says BBC

Malta has once again proven itself a leader in environmental excellence, with a remarkable 92% of its bathing waters rated ‘excellent’ in 2024, placing it firmly among Europe’s top nations for clean, safe swimming.
According to the BBC, the latest figures from the European Environment Agency highlight a stark contrast between Malta and countries such as Albania where only 16% of bathing waters achieved the highest classification and England, which continues to underperform, with just 64.2% of sites rated as excellent.

In a statistical ranking of bathing water quality across Europe, Cyprus topped the table with an impressive 99.2% of its waters rated excellent, followed closely by Bulgaria (97.9%), Greece (97%), Austria (95.8%), and Croatia (95.2%) with Germany also performing strongly at 90.5%, reflecting a broad commitment to clean, safe swimming conditions throughout the EU.
In stark contrast, England’s bathing waterquality lags well behind its European neighbours, and was found to be five times more likely to be polluted than waters in the EU. Environmental campaigners warn that the UK risks regaining its unfortunate title as the “dirty man of Europe” if urgent action is not taken.
