Think Egypt has the oldest pyramids? Think again! Malta might be small, but it is home to one of the oldest civilisations still standing today  and we are not just saying that to make the island sound cool.

Thousands of years ago, before the Romans, Greeks or even the pyramids of Egypt, people were already living in Malta and building massive stone temples. These ancient Maltese were part of the Neolithic civilisation, and they built temples that are older than Stonehenge!

One of the most amazing sites is the Ġgantija Temples on the island of Gozo. These were built around 3600 BC, which makes them over 5,600 years old! The name “Ġgantija” comes from the Maltese word for giants, because people once believed that only giants could have lifted the huge stones.

And guess what? These temples are still standing today! That is why Malta is so important to archaeologists: the people who study the past. The temples were used for rituals and worship, and some even had underground chambers where bones and offerings were found.

So how did this tiny island end up with such a big history? Well, Malta is in the perfect spot in the Mediterranean. Ancient people travelling by sea would stop there, and many decided to stay and build. Over time, Malta became a busy hub full of culture, farming and clever ideas.

That is why Malta is not just another beach holiday spot: it is a living museum, with some of the oldest buildings in the world that still stand proudly today.
