Malta International Contemporary Art Space Announce Second Major Exhibition: The Space We Inhabit

The Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) has announced its second major exhibition, The Space We Inhabit, opening Saturday, 14 June 2025. The show will spotlight six of Malta’s most established contemporary artists: Caesar Attard, Vince Briffa, Austin Camilleri, Joyce Camilleri, Anton Grech, and Pierre Portelli.
Curated around the theme of space—both physical and conceptual—the exhibition will span all three main floors of the museum, featuring works in painting, sculpture, video, and sound. Each artist offers a distinct response to the idea of space, reflecting both Maltese heritage and international artistic dialogues.
Minister for National Heritage and the Arts Owen Bonnici described the exhibition as “a significant milestone for Maltese contemporary art,” highlighting MICAS’s role in offering artists an international platform. Artistic Director Edith Devaney praised the calibre of the participating artists, noting their “far-reaching reputations” and international recognition.
“This is a celebration of Maltese excellence,” added MICAS Executive Chairperson Phyllis Muscat. “Many of the works are newly produced or adapted for this exhibition, and we encourage the public to engage with this important cultural moment.”
MICAS is located within restored 17th-century fortifications in Floriana, overlooking Valletta. The museum opened in October 2024 and is quickly establishing itself as a major player in the global contemporary art scene.
Exhibition opens: 14 June 2025
