Malta coach Emilio De Leo has placed the spotlight on several fresh faces as he named his provisional squad for September’s international matches against Lithuania and San Marino.

The headline addition is Irvin Cardona of Saint-Étienne, who earns his first call-up after committing his international future to Malta.

The forward recently completed a permanent move to the French club, having previously impressed in Ligue 2 and during a loan spell at Espanyol.

Another newcomer is Jake Brimmer, currently with Auckland FC in Australia’s A-League. The attacking midfielder brings overseas experience and creative flair, qualities that De Leo hopes will add variety to Malta’s play.

Young talent is also represented by 19-year-old Kean Scicluna of Żabbar St Patrick. Having progressed through the U17 and U21 squads, he is rewarded for his recent performances, including a decisive goal against San Marino at youth level.

Yannick Yankam, who returned to Malta this summer with Valletta FC, is also recalled to strengthen midfield options.

Among the returnees is Ilyas Chouaref of Sion, available again after suspension. Captain Matthew Guillaumier misses the Lithuania tie due to suspension but will feature against San Marino, while injuries rule out Teddy Teuma and James Lee Carragher.
