Malta Chamber Of SMEs Backs Affordable Housing Initiative

The Malta Chamber of SMEs has expressed support for the affordable housing initiative jointly launched by the Government and the Church, following a thorough review that addressed its initial concerns.

While acknowledging the gap in the market for enabling lower-middle-income families to become homeowners, the Chamber had initially raised concerns regarding potential abuse, inefficiencies, and interference with free market principles.

To clarify these issues, the SME Chamber held separate discussions with the Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation, Hon. Rodrick Galdes, and representatives from the Foundation for Affordable Housing.

These meetings provided assurances that governance, market stability, and fair implementation would be maintained through transparent mechanisms designed to minimise the risks identified.

Following this process, the Chamber has confirmed its support for the initiative, emphasising the importance of continued strict safeguards and transparency to ensure that the intended households benefit fully.

The Malta Chamber of SMEs also committed to ongoing engagement with relevant stakeholders to monitor the scheme’s implementation, ensuring that it remains aligned with its objectives and continues to address the housing needs of lower-middle-income families effectively.
