A conference organised by the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works on the Malta 2050 Vision, themed ‘Sustainable Mobility and Infrastructure’, brought together stakeholders and organisations to discuss various aspects of the sector. The event forms part of a broader consultation and information process linked to the Government’s vision for 2050.

The event convened representatives from Transport Malta and Infrastructure Malta, alongside academics, NGOs, and the business community, to discuss priorities and next steps towards a sustainable transport system and modern, efficient, and resilient infrastructure.

The conference was addressed by the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett, who emphasised the importance of open, realistic discussions based on clear principles, aiming to build a mobility framework that reflects citizens’ real needs. He highlighted several measures already implemented under the ‘Reshaping Our Mobility’ initiative and mentioned sustainable alternatives offered by the Government, including free land-based public transport, new ferry routes, incentives for carpooling, and park & ride services.

Dr Jonathan Spiteri, from the Malta 2050 Vision team, explained how the Vision aspires to place the public at the heart of transport systems. Through new technologies and sustainable structural investments, he said, Malta will see changes in how people travel and how logistics are designed—whether by land, sea, or air.

In the second part of the conference, a series of interventions were made by attendees in a discussion with Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia and Infrastructure Malta CEO Steve Ellul. The dialogue focused on concrete steps being taken to improve connectivity and infrastructure in the country, as well as the challenges related to changing mindsets and the use of existing infrastructure.

The conference demonstrated a clear consensus among participants on the need for a collaborative, strategic, and long-term approach to ensure that mobility in Malta benefits both local communities and the national economy.

The public consultation on the Malta 2050 Vision remains open, and anyone interested can share their aspirations at envision2050.gov.mt.
