Major Disney+ and National Geographic Production Underway in Malta

Disney+ and National Geographic are currently filming their new production Surviving Pompeii in Malta.

The series, which will be streamed on Disney+, blends documented facts about the natural disaster that struck Pompeii with a dramatic retelling narrated by acclaimed actor Tom Hiddleston.

Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici, together with Film Commissioner Johann Grech, visited the set at Fort Ricasoli, where they met the production team and cast.

Minister Bonnici said the fact that a production of this scale is being shot in Malta demonstrates the country’s growing reputation as a serious and established film destination. He noted that international projects of this kind not only promote Malta globally but also create high-quality employment opportunities for locals.

Film Commissioner Johann Grech echoed this, praising the world-class skills of Maltese crew members. He stressed that productions like Surviving Pompeii not only showcase Malta’s locations but also generate long-term benefits for the local film industry.

Around 65% of the production is being filmed in Malta, with locations including Villa Bologna, Fort Ricasoli and the Majjistral Nature and History Park. Approximately 167 Maltese workers are involved across various sectors.

The three-part English-language series, each episode lasting about 60 minutes, has also benefited from Malta’s Cash Rebate Programme.
