Maintenance And Preservation Works On The Loġġa tal-Palju

Maintenance and preservation works are currently underway on the Loġġa tal-Palju, located on Telgħa tas-Saqqajja in Rabat and overlooking Triq it-Tiġrija.

Built in 1696 based on a design by the renowned architect Lorenzo Gafà and on the initiative of Giovanni Gourgion, the Capitano della Verga of the Mdina Municipality, served as the place from which prizes were awarded to the winners of horse and donkey races that had been held regularly since the Medieval period. The event was so popular that even the Grand Master of the Order of St John used to attend.
The last restoration of this structure was carried out in 2016 by the Restoration and Preservation Department. Due to continuous exposure to the natural elements, new interventions were deemed necessary to ensure the long-term preservation of this unique monument.
The Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, stated, “This investment aims to preserve one of the most important historical and cultural symbols in Rabat. The Loġġa tal-Palju is not just a building, but a living reminder of Maltese traditions and festivities.
Through this project, it is ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy and appreciate this emblem of collective identity and history.”
