Today, Thursday, March 7th, 2024, marks four years since Malta documented its first local case of COVID-19, a moment that signalled the beginning of an unprecedented period in the country’s history.

In the months that followed this initial case, Malta, like the rest of the world, grappled with the challenges posed by the pandemic. The government implemented various measures to curb the spread of the virus, including lockdowns, social distancing guidelines, and mask mandates. These measures, while necessary for public health, had a profound impact on daily life, the economy, and the social fabric of the nation.

As businesses closed and streets emptied, the vibrancy that characterises Malta’s towns and cities, especially the bustling capital of Valletta, diminished significantly.

This drastic change in the island’s landscape is poignantly captured in a drone shot by local creator Victor Abela. His footage shows Valletta, typically a hive of activity, looking barren and deserted, serving as a stark visual reminder of the pandemic’s effect on Malta.

Mizzi Studio, an architecture firm with bases in London and Malta, has achieved a significant milestone by reaching the finalist stages of the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2024 with their groundbreaking ‘Malta Bus Reborn’ project.

In 2019, Mizzi Studio captured the imagination of both locals and international audiences by proposing an innovative yet respectful revamp of Malta’s traditional buses. Their design introduces a new electric fleet that retains the charm and iconic features of the classic Maltese bus while incorporating modern, eco-friendly technologies.

The traditional Maltese bus, with its vibrant colours and unique designs, has long stood as a cultural emblem of Malta. Recognising the importance of preserving this heritage while embracing sustainability, Mizzi Studio skilfully integrated classic design elements such as chrome grills and round hooded headlights with modern electric chassis.

This thoughtful fusion not only honours Malta’s rich history but also aligns with contemporary environmental concerns, offering a sustainable mode of transportation that reduces carbon emissions without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.

The New European Bauhaus initiative champions the creation of a sustainable and inclusive future that delights our senses and nurtures our well-being.
