Spain Breaks Host Nation Germany’s Hearts With Late Winner

Jul 6 2024 Share

European giants Spain have broken millions of German hearts as La Roja managed to overcome the host nation with a last minute extra time winner in Stuttgart.

With only 65 seconds of the tense match left and a penalty shootout looking inevitable, the always reliable Mikel Merino stepped up and scored the goal to send Spain to another Euros semi-final and to shatter all German dreams and hopes of a historical Euros win at home.

It was clear throughout the match that Germany who had the oldest squad at the Euros, struggled to contain Spain’s youthful energy and pace with Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo all shining against the experienced German backline.

Olmo especially stole the show scoring the opener and assisting Mikel Merino for Spain’s late winner.

After the match German manager Julian Nagelsmann stated “I’m fighting back tears because it was very emotional.”

“I’ve always said that we need the fans in the country behind us, we did our best for them… the feeling was special.”

Spain will now face favourites France in the semi-final, with the second semi-final between Netherlands, Türkiye, Switzerland and England set to be determined on Saturday evening.

Portugal’s EURO Journey Ends in Tears for Ronaldo

Portugal's Euro Journey Ends in Tears for Ronaldo
Jul 6 2024 Share

In a heartbreaking conclusion to Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2024 campaign, national heroes and veterans Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe faced an emotional exit following their loss to France in the quarter-finals.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has stated that “no individual decisions” have been made regarding the international futures of Ronaldo and Pepe, both of whom have been key figures throughout the tournament.

Ronaldo, 39, played every minute of Portugal’s shootout win over Slovenia in the last 16 and their subsequent penalty defeat to France. Despite his experience, Ronaldo had a challenging tournament, failing to score in any of his five appearances. He missed an extra-time penalty against Slovenia but redeemed himself in the shootout. However, he once again appeared frustrated during the loss to France, leading to speculation about his future with the national team.

Pepe, at 41, made history by becoming the oldest player in European Championship history. His contributions on the field were invaluable, and his emotional embrace with Ronaldo after the match was an emotional moment in Portugal’s football history. The 41-year-old was in tears as Ronaldo consoled him.

“His tears are frustration,” Martinez commented. “Pepe is a role model in Portuguese football. What he did tonight and in the tournament will stay with us for the next generations.”
