Times of Malta published an interview with Kyonne Gravina, a Love Island Malta contestant following his reveal on social media. The interview is centred around his relationship with his late father, who was jailed for beating a woman.

Despite his father’s troubled past, Kyonne emphasizes his own identity, aiming to showcase it on the reality show. He recounts his attempts to guide his father, expressing disappointment at unfortunately not being able to do so.

Kyonne’s father Keith was handed a four year prison sentence after beating up a woman in her home in 2018. He was also separately accused of assaulting another woman by hitting her with a metal rod amongst other things.

Days after being sentenced for his first crime, Gravina harmed himself whilst in prison. Despite surviving the ordeal, he died last month after spending 5 months in hospital.

Kyonne highlighted how he intends to keep moving forward, especially for his mother’s sake. Kyonne revealed that he was saddened but not surprised, and is now hoping to move on with his life.

Love Island Malta’s upcoming season offers Kyonne a platform to assert his individuality as the new season kicks off on Sunday.

For the ninth consecutive year, Malta has ranked first in the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map Equality Index, which measures the civil and human rights of LGBTIQ+ communities in 49 European countries.

Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg expressed satisfaction with this achievement, marking the second positive recognition for Malta this week from international organizations in equality and inclusivity. She emphasized that this international recognition reflects the progressive reforms implemented by the government, granting civil rights to LGBTIQ individuals to live with dignity and without discrimination.

Buttigieg noted that this unprecedented record for Malta is a testament to the values of the Maltese people, who have overcome past prejudices to embrace inclusivity and equality. She credited the continuous commitment and dedication of numerous individuals and organizations advocating for LGBTIQ+ rights, which have made Malta a model for other countries implementing similar reforms.

Expressing gratitude to these individuals and organizations, Buttigieg urged Malta not to regress in this area. She reiterated the government’s commitment to further strengthen human rights in Malta and beyond, ensuring continued progress in equality and inclusivity for the LGBTIQ+ community.
