Taking to social media, linguistics enthusiast Kurt Rumbajsa highlighted the incredibly complex manner with which language, particularly Maltese, adapts and changes according to the culture which we grow up in.
He referred to the MasterChef Malta controversy which saw one of the judges using the word ‘jiddrajjalekx’ – an English-Maltese combo of the word ‘dry’ – instead of ‘jinxef.’

Kurt rhetorically asked why such cases stick out whereas other cases, like chicken breast instead of ‘sidra tat-tiġieġ’ or ‘jittowja’ instead of ‘jinżel fl-ilma.’
He explained that such linguistic changes are a symptom of the culture we grow up in.
Why such changes occur depends on a multitude of factors – whether we’re exposed to material in school, how our parents at home use language, and much more.
What do you think?
