Launch of EU-Co-Financed ‘Species Diversification For Maltese Aquaculture’ Project

In a significant step towards improving the resilience and sustainability of Malta’s aquaculture sector, the Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, alongside Dr Frank Fabri, CEO of the Aquatic Resources Malta Agency, officially launched the ‘Species Diversification for Maltese Aquaculture’ project. The initiative, co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), aims to foster innovation and growth in Malta’s thriving aquaculture industry.
The project focuses on introducing closed-cycle breeding methods for new fish species, further diversifying the aquaculture sector. Currently, Malta’s aquaculture industry produces around 2,500 tonnes annually of sea bream and sea bass. However, with the introduction of amberjack and red porgy into the breeding cycle, the project seeks to reduce the industry’s vulnerability and promote long-term sustainability.
Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said expressed her satisfaction with the project’s potential to strengthen the aquaculture sector. “Aquaculture remains a key priority for this Government,” she stated. “Through initiatives like this, we continue to show our commitment to supporting the sector. This project will help improve the resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness of Malta’s aquaculture industry.”
Mark Vella, Head of Communications at the European Commission Representation in Malta, praised the project for its innovative approach to aquaculture diversification. “This project is an excellent example of how the European Commission, in collaboration with its member states, fosters sustainable and diverse aquaculture practices,” Vella stated. “It demonstrates the European Commission’s commitment to serving the interests of European citizens by promoting innovation and sustainability in the aquaculture sector.”
