Large Crowds Fill Valletta To Protest Malta’s Inaction Over Gaza

People from all walks of Maltese life gathered in Valletta yesterday to protest what they described as the government’s continued inaction in the face of Israeli aggression in Gaza, which many are calling a genocide.
Protesters marched through the capital banging pots and chanting various pro-Palestine slogans.
Moviment Graffitti, one of the protest organisers, took to Facebook ahead of the demonstration stating, “Every day we see images emerging from Gaza showing the destruction and suffering caused by Israel’s actions. We are calling on the Maltese government to find the courage to stand up against this clear injustice towards the Palestinian people.”
The protest ended in front of Castille, home to Malta’s parliament. Among those who addressed the crowd were Moviment Graffitti’s Andre Callus, Palestinian Ambassador to Malta Fadi Hanania, and President Emeritus Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca.
The government was represented only by MP Carmelo Abela. Nationalist Party MPs Albert Buttigieg, Mark Anthony Sammut, and Mario de Marco were also present.
ADPD Chairperson Sandra Gauci and Secretary General Ralph Cassar attended, as did Arnold Cassola and Mark Camilleri Gambin on behalf of Momentum.
Whilst the protest was ongoing, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on his socials that Malta will formally recognise the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
