Lampuki season has officially begun in Malta, with the first catch of the popular local fish arriving from fishermen.

Also known as mahi-mahi or dorado, lampuki is a seasonal fish that migrates to Maltese waters between late August and December and is a staple in Maltese cuisine.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, Anton Refalo, marked the start of the season on Facebook, highlighting that the fresh, locally caught fish not only offers a unique flavour but also supports Malta’s many local fishermen.

Traditionally, fishing boats in Marsaxlokk are blessed by a priest before the season begins.

This year, the honour was given to Canon George Spiteri, Parish Administrator of Marsaxlokk, who performed the blessing ceremony.

The start of lampuki season is eagerly awaited each year, celebrated by both locals and tourists, as it signals the availability of one of Malta’s most beloved and iconic fish dishes.
